The No. 4 St. John’s Prep hockey team opened up the Division 1A “Super 8” tournament with a bang Wednesday evening, knocking off Catholic Conference rival No. 5 Xaverian 2-1 in the opening round at Loring Arena in Framingham.
Jack Gilligan and Ryan Webb scored the goals for the Eagles, while Jake DiNapoli, Josiah Brown and Ryan Hart each had one assist.
The Prep (12-4-5) will take on the winner of No. 1 Arlington/No. 8 Framingham Sunday at a time and place to be determined.
MIAA BOYS HOCKEY
Division 1 North
Westford Academy 4, Fenwick 3
Despite scoring 13 seconds into the game, the Crusaders fell in the opening round of the Division 1 North tournament at Chelmsford Forum.
Ian Worthley, John Bernbaum and Tom Estella each scored one goal in the loss for the Crusaders.
Fenwick finishes the season at 11-8-3.
MIAA GIRLS HOCKEY
Division 1
Belmont 4, Winthrop 2
Winthrop simply didn’t have the firepower to get past No. 7 Belmont in the opening round of the Division 1 tournament at Skip Viglirolo Rink in Belmont.
Emma Holmes and Hannah Parker scored the goals for the Vikings in the defeat.
Winthrop finishes the season at 8-8-3.
