LYNN — The North Shore Navigators will continue a unique Futures Collegiate Baseball League tradition by welcoming a select group of rising college freshmen to their 2020 roster.
Infielder Nick Goodwin (Kansas State) and outfielder Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt) are the first two members of a growing group of youngsters who will take their first steps towards the college level as Navs this summer. President and General Manager Derek January made the announcement on Monday.
Goodwin will head east after completing his senior year at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in his hometown of Overland Park, Kan. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound shortstop was a First Team All-State player during his junior campaign as he helped the Saints win a regional championship and finish second in the 5A state tournament. His 36 RBI in 2019 were the fourth-most in the school’s single-season history. The future K-State Wildcat was a .387 hitter and also reached base at a .483 clip, logged 11 extra-base knocks and scored 22 runs.
Scouting Report: Strong all-around player … outstanding baseball acumen … plays the game the right way … MLB comp: Nick Ahmed.
Hewett hails from Greenland, N.H., and will join former Navs catcher Dominic Keegan (2018) on the roster for defending College World Series champion Vanderbilt next season. The 6-foot-3, 202-pounder, who was born in Thailand, has helped Portsmouth High School win two state championships in both baseball and basketball. He earned First Team All-State honors in center field, hitting .343 with a .483 on-base percentage, 19 runs scored, 15 RBI and 16 stolen bases as the Clippers moved up to the Granite State’s Division 1 level last spring.
Scouting Report: plus defender with game-changing speed … outstanding athlete … fun to watch … MLB comp: Wil Myers.
