Lynn native and Classical alum Chris Gasper is making a career move. After a 19-year run at the Boston Globe, Gasper will be moving on to join the sports team at WCVB Channel 5 in Boston as a sports reporter for SportsCenter 5. Gasper will join the award-winning sports team of Duke Castiglione, Bob Halloran and fellow North Shore native Mike Lynch, effective April 23.
“I’m really thrilled to be joining the team at Channel 5,” said Gasper, who graduated from Classical in 1997 before attending Boston University. “I know a lot of people in the North Shore have been watching Channel 5 for a long time and seeing local hero Mike Lynch, and I couldn’t be happier to join him. Lynchie was the first person to put me on TV at Channel 5 and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity.”
Gasper joined the Boston Globe as a full-time employee for Boston.com in 2001 and began writing for the Boston Globe‘s North section in 2002. He moved to the Boston Globe sports department full-time in 2006 and served as a New England Patriots beat writer from 2006 to 2009. From there he became a sports columnist, where he wrote about some of the biggest stories in the sports world for the next 11 years. He’s also worked as a radio host for 98.5 The Sports Hub and has been a television contributor for both WCVB Channel 5 and NBC Sports Boston since 2008.
Over the course of his career, Gasper has chronicled each of the four major Boston sports teams winning a championship — the Boston Celtics in 2008, the Boston Bruins in 2011, the Boston Red Sox in 2013 and 2018, and the Patriots in 2014, 2016, and 2018. He has reported on ten Super Bowls, three Stanley Cup Finals, two World Series, and two NBA Finals. He has also covered the NCAA Final Four, the College Football Playoff, the 2016 Summer Olympics and the Little League World Series.
“I’ve had to pinch myself quite a few times over my years at the Globe, it’s really been surreal at times,” said Gasper. “I grew up reading the pages of the Globe, and it was almost like a religious experience. To then get the opportunity to sit in a press box with the likes of Jackie MacMullan, Michael Holley, Kevin Paul Dupont, Dan Shaughnessy and so many others was a dream come true.
“Growing up in Lynn watching Channel 5 and reading the Globe, I never dreamed that I’d be able to work at one of those places, let alone both,” Gasper said. “I’m forever grateful for the opportunity I got at the Globe, and I’m excited for this new opportunity.”
