PEABODY — Cal Anderson’s dad worked for Eastman Kodak, so cameras and film were often given as gifts every Christmas and birthday. That started a love of photography that Anderson, who will be 71 next month, continues to this day.
He lives on Lynnfield Street, near the Torigian Family YMCA, and his backyard bordering fish-rich Cedar Pond, is a “virtual wildlife sanctuary” filled with birds, Canada geese, rabbits, coyotes and more.
Anderson grew up in this house and has lived there for 64 years. The wetlands offer limitless opportunities to catch nature at its prettiest (baby ducks) and not-so-pretty (hawks and other birds of prey catching “lunch.”
Earlier this week, Anderson captured this photo of an osprey grabbing a bluegill right out of the water. “It was my catch of the day,” he said, then chuckled.
The Peabody native is retired from GE in Lynn, where he helped develop and test aircraft engines, including those that powered the Stealth Bomber and helicopters. Much time is spent these days, looking out at the pond and setting up birdhouses and boxes where ducks can deposit eggs.
