Make way for ducklings

Bill Brotherton

May 7, 2020 by Bill Brotherton

In addition to it being Mother’s Day, Sunday is also Duckling Day. And you will be able to celebrate Boston’s iconic Make Way For Ducklings Statues from the comfort of your own home.

The sculptures, a landmark in the Boston Public Garden, were inspired by Robert McCloskey’s beloved 1941 children’s book. They depict a mommy duck (Mrs. Mallard) trailed by her eight ducklings.

Can you name the ducklings? (Answer below)

On Sunday, May 10, at noon, Friends of the Public Garden will stream a live “virtual” Duckling Day on Facebook! The broadcast will feature greetings from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, fun video remembering Duckling Days past, and a live reading of “Make Way for Ducklings.” It will run about 20 minutes.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the live broadcast, the footage will be available for all to enjoy afterward.

Have any photos of your favorite Ducklings? Email them to [email protected] with the subject “Duckling Day” and favorites will be shared on Facebook and Instagram the day of the Garden party.

(Quiz answer: The ducklings are Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack.)
