PEABODY — Robert May is no stranger to challenges and he is embracing a new one with his decision to run for the Massachusetts House district that includes West Peabody.
A Republican, May thinks the House can benefit from a conservative legislator representing Danvers, West Peabody and part of Middleton.
“My main concern is the level of spending and taxation in Massachusetts. As a first-time candidate, I would get up there, pop the hood, and look underneath,” he said.
A Malden native, May, 58, launched Techsource Thermal Solutions in Newburyport 18 years ago, combining his mechanical engineering and finance training and experience working as a business consultant.
May and his wife, Tricia, have lived in Peabody since 1992 and have four children. May said he was active when his children were younger in Peabody youth basketball and girls softball. He said he took a vocal stand with fellow neighbors against bringing a high-pressure natural gas line through Peabody.
“I’m a very well-known commodity,” he said.
State Rep. Theodore Speliotis announced last month that he would not seek reelection this fall and retire when his legislative term ends in January.
May said he considered running for state legislator 10 years ago and decided against it because “the timing was never right.”
“I’m at a point in my life where I can give back to my district by being the type of no-nonsense voice on Beacon Hill that opposes prioritizing special interest groups over our state’s hard-working taxpayers and seniors,” May said, adding, “I’m also at a point where, like many of us, I’ve seen enough of the radical left-wing proposals gaining traction in the Legislature that I’ve reached the point where I decided to do something about it.”
