Lynn reports three more virus deaths

Gayla Cawley

May 12, 2020 by Gayla Cawley

Three more Lynn residents have died from the coronavirus since Monday, but the city continues to report a low number of new cases this month.

Elsewhere, Revere and Swampscott reported new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Seventy-eight Lynn residents have now died from the virus, Mayor Thomas M. McGee said on a conference call with the Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night.

McGee reported the city’s new death toll shortly after 7 p.m., which was two more deaths than the city had reported in its daily update at 4 p.m.

The city’s elderly residents are dying at the highest rate, with the majority of deaths coming from people between the ages of 65-104, according to city data.

With 26 new cases reported on Tuesday, Lynn now has 2,805 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

However, day-to-day increases have dipped significantly so far this month. Aside from spikes on May 1 and 7, the number of new cases reported daily have ranged between 20-52 new cases, with just 16 new cases reported on Monday.

City data provided on Monday showed Lynn’s first collective decrease in cases, but the charts provided by the city Tuesday showed a correction in those figures, with the 16-case increase on that day.

On Monday, McGee and Michele Desmarais, the city’s public health director, signed an executive order regarding boat ramps, marinas and yacht clubs.

Per the order, boat ramps in Lynn will only be open to Massachusetts residents, with certain provisions that will be enforced by the city’s Harbormaster, Lynn Police and the Coast Guard. The EDIC boat ramp will be open for launching only and there will be no parking in its Blossom Street lot, according to McGee’s office.

According to the provisions of the order, social distancing must be observed, only one boat may access the ramp at once, and only people from immediate families who live in the same household are permitted to board a vessel together, according to McGee’s office.

A failure to comply with the order and its provisions may result in fine up to $1,000.

Swampscott is reporting 113 COVID-19 cases as of Monday, a three-case increase over last Friday, and seven deaths.

As of Tuesday, Revere has 1,416 cases, an additional 78 cases since last Friday. The city has not updated its virus fatality count since last Friday, when 53 deaths were reported.

Lynnfield and Nahant reported no change in their numbers on Tuesday. Lynnfield has 87 cases and 11 deaths, while Nahant has 34 cases and six deaths.

At press time, Marblehead, Peabody and Saugus had not released updated numbers. As of Monday, Marblehead has 161 cases and 16 deaths, Peabody has 842 cases and 99 deaths, and Saugus has 424 cases and 22 deaths.
