LYNN — St. Mary’s has announced its choices for Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, recognizing seniors Owen Maguire and Kelsey Sullivan for their outstanding careers. Every year, each school in the Catholic Central League picks their top Male and Female Scholar Athletes. The athletes and their parents are presented a plaque and are recognized for their achievement.
Sullivan had a 4.35 GPA in her time at St. Mary’s and was in the National Honor Society for her junior and senior years, being named Co-Secretary as a senior. She was also a Student Lead Mentor and the Student Ambassador for the Spartans.
Sullivan earned a number of awards in her time at St. Mary’s, including the St. Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement. She was named a Boston Globe All-Scholastic and a Boston Herald All-Scholastic player for hockey in her senior year, Most Improved Player in lacrosse in her freshman year and Unsung Hero Award winner in lacrosse in her junior year.
Sullivan took part in a number of community service missions during her high school career, taking part in Rachel’s Challenge, Miles for Kyles Fundraisers, Hunger for Justice and Autism Walks. She also volunteered at the Arbors Assisted Living facility, took part in a hockey fundraiser at Spinelli’s, helped at a homeless shelter and organized a book drive at Brigham Baby Academy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Sullivan was also a three-sport athlete with the Spartans, playing varsity soccer as a freshman and sophomore and also playing four years of varsity hockey and lacrosse. She was a two-time CCL All-Star in hockey and was also chosen as a team captain for both the hockey and lacrosse teams in her senior year. She also had the honor of being chosen to play at Hockey Night in Boston and also in the Shriner’s All-Star Game. She was named as a CCL All-Star for lacrosse in her junior year, but did not get to play her senior year of lacrosse due to the cancellation of the season.
Sullivan will continue her education at the next level, having already received acceptance letters from Boston University, UMass Amherst, Providence College, Bentley University and University of Vermont.
Maguire kept a 4.0 GPA at St. Mary’s, earning a place in the National Honors Society. He was named to the Principal’s List and the Honor Roll, and he earned the St. Mary’s Alumni Scholarship in his senior year.
He also was a St. Mary’s Student Leader and a Student Council Homeroom Representative.
Maguire also participated in a number of community service projects in his time at St. Mary’s, Volunteering at My Brother’s Table and Gregg House Preschool. He was also a participant in Hunger for Justice and Rachel’s Challenge.
As an athlete, Maguire excelled as a three-sport athlete. He was a two-year varsity player on the golf team, earning CCL All-Star honors in 2018 and helping the Spartans win state titles in both 2017 and 2018. Winter saw Maguire move to the rink, as he was a three-year varsity letterman on the hockey team. He was a CCL All-Star and a team captain in 2020. Maguire was also a team captain and three-year varsity player on the lacrosse team, having been voted team captain for the 2020 season that was not played.
Maguire plans to continue his education and has already received acceptance letters from Northeastern University, UMass Amherst and Providence College.
