SWAMPSCOTT — Arrows are being painted along Humphrey Street to encourage one-way pedestrian traffic, but it’s not because people aren’t “social distancing” — it’s because the town wants to get ahead of the nice weather.
According to Town Administrator Sean Fitzgerald, the town is expecting more people to get out and walk along the picturesque Humphrey Street, which connects to Lynn Shore Drive, as the weather warms up. It’s important to encourage social distancing while that happens, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fitzgerals said.
“Right now, we’re seeing a resumption of some of the outdoor activities,” Fitzgerald said. “But we want people to be safe.”
Swampscott began encouraging one-way pedestrian traffic on Humphrey Street over a month ago, Fitzgerald said, but now the signage will run from Mission on the Bay, 141 Humphrey St., to the Swampscott Fish House, 425 Humphrey St.
“We have a beautiful coastline and a lot of people who like to go out walking and we need to make sure we can mitigate the transmission of this virus to the most vulnerable people,” Fitzgerald said. “We want to get ahead of the curve as it gets nicer.”
