The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s annual banquet, scheduled for April 2 at Westin Copley Place in Boston, did not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, a virtual banquet will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at www.ouimet.org. The virtual event will honor 2020 scholarship recipients and include a fireside chat between PGA Hall of Famer Tom Kite and the banquet MC Dave Marr III.
The Ouimet Fund’s purpose is to help deserving young men and women, who have worked at golf courses in Massachusetts, obtain a college education. It provides need-based college scholarships, which are renewable and worth an average of $30,000 over the course of four years, with some students receiving as much as $65,000.
Since 1949, the fund, named after Francis Ouimet, the Brookline amateur who shocked the professional golf world by winning the U.S. Open in 1913 at The Country Club, has awarded more than $38 million in scholarships to more than 6,000 deserving men and women. Recently, Ouimet Scholars have excelled in school, graduating at a 92 percent rate and achieving an 3.3 GPA average.
The Ouimet Fund is the largest independent scholarship fund in New England. Congratulations are in order for all the local scholars for the important, valuable work they do at local golf clubs:
