Man sought by police after Nahant crash

NAHANT — The driver of a stolen vehicle that crashed into a Nahant home, sending one party to the hospital, has still not been located.

Nahant Police Chief Robert C. Dwyer stated that an officer attempted to stop a green Toyota Highlander traveling at a high rate of speed on Flash Road at approximately 9:05 p.m. Monday.

After the driver reportedly failed to comply with the request to stop, the officer determined the vehicle had been stolen out of Arlington. The driver continued onto Caste Road and struck 135 Castle Road, causing “substantial” damage to the vehicle’s front end and passenger side door.

The male driver fled the scene immediately following the crash, and an off-duty nurse assisted officers in attending to a female passenger, who was taken to Salem Hospital with minor injuries.

Dwyer also reported the house’s foundation was pushed through in the location it had been hit, and there was exterior damage to the home’s shingles and landscaping.

Swampscott Police and Massachusetts State Police K9s and Airwing helped Nahant officers conducted an extensive search of the area, but the parties couldn’t locate the driver.

“Thank you to Nahant Fire Department, Swampscott Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police for (their) assistance, as well as the nurse who aided the passenger,” Dwyer said in a statement released Monday night. He added that officers do not believe the operator is still within the town, nor do they believe he poses any risk to the public.

The incident remains under investigation and Dwyer reported that the female passenger is still being questioned by police.

The crash is the second to occur in Nahant this week.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, Nahant Police reportedly received several 911 calls about a van that had crashed into a house on Nahant Road. The operator, who was the sole occupant in the vehicle, was transported to Salem Hospital and later pronounced dead.
