Letter to the Editor: Let’s wake up before it’s too late

Like so many Americans and people around the world, I remain totally shocked and dismayed by President Trump and his band of corrupt cronies.

To borrow a word from his inaugural speech, nothing is being done to stop the “carnage.” Republicans have not stepped up. Not even to name what’s happening nor to offer a plan to stem the demise of our noble democracy.  Waiting until November isn’t going to stop the staggering threat to life and freedom.

Trump has been brilliant in framing this pandemic in binary terms. Either a shut down or open up. Nothing in-between. So, what if we have to sacrifice lives to get the economy started? To paraphrase Melania Trump, “Who Cares?” We all know who the dead will be. Front line workers who’ve been pretty much disenfranchised already are putting their lives at risk, earning low wages they’ve no choice, they need to work.

It’s demoralizing to realize that America is the laughingstock across the globe. We’ve lost our credibility and given up our position of leadership and hope. We should have been first in confronting this dreadful virus. Instead, we’re chasing after the planet’s smallest and most deprived nations.

We have a president who is totally disinterested and unfit that he’s eschewing science and the integrity of researchers and practitioners who took oaths to heal and protect in favor of artificial measures for his own survival.

Wake up from our stupor! Any moment now will be too late.

Debbie Friedlander, Chair

Swampscott Democratic Town Committee
