LYNN — Shanel Anderson and Sara (LaMothe) Bailey both grew up in Lynn, and when the Soul City Yoga co-owners/instructors sought to do something to give back during the pandemic they knew there was no place like “om” that was more deserving of help.

“Obviously, as Lynn women, we know what the people in this city are capable of when it comes to rallying around each other,” said Anderson.

Ever since Anderson founded the yoga studio in 2016 in Suite 212 of the Lydia Pinkham Building on Western Avenue, community access to yoga and wellness for the underserved and underrepresented has been a cornerstone of its mission.

Anderson said “we thought, ‘What can we do in our actual community?’ to provide support.” They decided on a Virtual Block Party on June 13, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The fundraiser will benefit Lynn organizations providing critical support during COVID-19: non-profits My Brother’s Table, The Food Project and YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts (formerly North Shore Rape Crisis Center).

There will be virtual yoga and fitness classes, DJ sets and live music, and conversations with city and community leaders.”Classes will be about 45 minutes each,” said Bailey. “And they will be accessible for all, even beginners,” said Anderson,

There will also be giveaways and prizes donated by business sponsors, which include LightHaus, Ravenstone Gifts, Digs Enamels and the Black-Owned Market.

Both women said the studio’s revenues are down during the pandemic. Yet they agree they are fortunate compared to many. Anderson said Soul City Yoga members have been supportive in many ways, including actively participating in virtual classes on Zoom and other social media outlets. To expand their reach outside Lynn, the virtual classes might continue after restrictions are lifted, whenever that may be, they said.

Anderson said those not wishing to participate in the classes but who want to help out may simply make a donation. A modest goal of $5,000 has been set; and the Soul City Yoga team’s suggested donation amount is $20. For information, to register or to just make a donation, go to www.soulcityom.com.
