Lynn reports additional COVID-19 death

Gayla Cawley

June 3, 2020 by Gayla Cawley

Lynn reported another coronavirus death on Wednesday, while Peabody’s number of cases has climbed over 1,000.

Elsewhere, new cases were reported in Saugus, but numbers remained the same in several other North Shore communities.

Lynn continues to approach a grim milestone as its death toll now stands at 91.

Although Lynn continues to report additional deaths on a near-daily basis, the city has been reporting a low number of new cases each day since last month.

On Wednesday, the city reported 19 additional cases, which brings its caseload to 3,464 — 1,760 residents have recovered from the virus.

Mayor Thomas M. McGee and the city’s public health director Michele Desmarais signed an executive order on Wednesday to rescind the overnight curfew in Lynn, which has been in effect since mid-April.

All other orders issued on April 11, which were extended on May 18, remain in effect, such as those mandating face coverings inside public establishments and prohibiting customers from entering restaurants, bars, or other food establishments, according to Wednesday’s executive order.

Peabody has reached another COVID-19 milestone, as the city is now reporting 1,001 cases. As of Wednesday, 137 residents have died and 540 have recovered from the virus, according to Peabody Health Director Sharon Cameron.

Cameron said on Monday that Peabody was no longer counting probable and suspected cases, thus lowering its previous case and death counts significantly.

But on Wednesday, Cameron said their system had changed again to conform with the state. Peabody is now reporting probable and confirmed, but not suspected, cases and deaths, which has resulted in a similar death count to last Friday, when 136 deaths were reported.

Six more people have been infected in Saugus since Monday, according to the state Department of Public Health. As of Wednesday, the town has 526 cases and 30 deaths.

Numbers remained the same in Lynnfield, Marblehead, Nahant and Swampscott on Wednesday.

There have been 93 cases and 11 deaths in Lynnfield, 224 cases and 30 deaths in Marblehead, 41 cases and six deaths in Nahant, and in Swampscott, 123 residents have been infected and eight have died.

At press time, Revere had not released updated numbers. As of Tuesday, the city has 1,676 cases and 76 deaths.
