LYNN — Two buildings were evacuated and the Lynn commuter rail was temporarily shut down after a construction crew ruptured a high pressure gas main on Blossom Street Tuesday afternoon, according to the Lynn Fire Department.
At about 1:30 p.m., Lynn firefighters responded to a “serious” natural gas leak at 150 Blossom St., Fire Capt. Joseph Zukas said.
“We got the call, they could smell gas in the area and struck an alarm to bring additional equipment there with gas meters,” said Zukas.
The rupture resulted in high natural gas readings in the area, but there were no reported injuries or fires, Zukas said.
As a precaution, the YMCA youth center and a church located next door were evacuated and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) shut down the Lynn commuter rail for about 20 minutes, Zukas said.
National Grid shut down the high level gas line and checked nearby buildings to make sure their natural gas readings were at safe levels.
Lynn firefighters, police and representatives from National Grid were on scene for about 45 minutes, Zukas said.
