Marblehead election features School Committee upset

MARBLEHEAD — School Committee incumbent Jennifer A. Schaeffner finished fourth in Tuesday’s town election with Pond Street resident Emily L. Barron winning a committee seat and committeewoman Sarah Jane Gold winning reelection.

Schaeffner’s loss in the four-way race for two committee seats was the biggest election upset on Tuesday. Putnam Road resident Lisa Wolf won a Municipal Light Commission seat, defeating incumbent Michael A. Tumulty 2,442-1,562 votes.

Unofficial election results gave Gold 2,382 votes; Barron 2,163 votes; West Shore Drive resident Catherine R. Martin 1,633 votes and Schaeffner 1,518 votes.

Board of Selectmen incumbents Jackie Belf-Becker, Moses Grader, Judith R. Jacobi and James E. Nye won reelection with Jacobi topping the ticket with 3,063 votes and board newcomer David Depew received 2,507 votes. 

Tuesday’s voting took place in good weather but with changes in polling locations to provide coronavirus precaution social distancing.

Uncontested candidates on the ballot include Town Moderator Gary Spiess; Assessor John P. Kelley; Board of Health member Todd Belf-Becker; Housing Authority board member Joan D. Cutler; Rossana Ferrante and Robert J. Schaeffner ran for reelection to the Planning Board. Recreation and Park Commissioners Linda A. Rice Collins, Matthew C. Martin, Derek Y. Norcross, Charles Edward Osborne Jr. and Gerald P. Tucker Jr. sought reelection uncontested.
