Lynnfield Library steps outside for patrons

Anne Marie Tobin

June 19, 2020 by Anne Marie Tobin

LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield Library has launched a new sidewalk service that allows patrons to bring many of the library’s publications and other items into their homes.

The service will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 p.m., and from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.

“It’s been a long few months, and we have been eager to get materials to, and provide additional services for, our wonderful patrons,” said Abigail Porter in a press release.

“As we launch this program, we are being cautious and safe. A few of our measures include staggered shifts for staff so fewer people are working alongside each other, rearranging work spaces and changing work procedures so that people can practice social distancing, and staff are wearing masks and self-monitoring their health before coming into the building.”

To reserve items, residents have several options. They can place the

items on hold using the library’s online catalog, by calling the library at (781) 334-5411, by emailing the library at [email protected] or by filling out an online form. Only items marked as “Available” may be reserved. Items from other libraries will not be available. Residents are limited to no more than five items per card per order. Library cards can be obtained by emailing or calling the library.

Residents will then be contacted regarding a pickup time.

“We will fill your orders as quickly as we can, while maintaining careful social distancing in the library,” said Porter. “Staff are wearing masks, we are limiting the number of people involved in the process internally to reduce the number of touch points on the materials.”

Strict protocols must be followed during pick-up. Patrons must park in the parking lot and pick up their materials, which will be placed on tables on the sidewalk in front of the building. Patrons are instructed to step back after announcing their name. A staff member will then place a bag containing the items on the table. Patrons may not pick up the bag until the staff member has stepped back to a safe distance. Patrons are advised to be considerate of their neighbors by wearing a mask and remaining  a distance six feet apart.

Strict protocols will also be followed when returning items. Items may be returned during the designated Sidewalk Service hours. Items should be placed in one of the red bins set up on the tables. All returned items will be quarantined for up to two weeks. The items will remain on the cardholder’s account until the quarantine period is over, but there will be no late fines.

“If you have set up an appointment and start feeling ill, please do not come and pick up your books,” said Porter. “Call us and we will hold them for you until you are feeling better.”

Please email [email protected] or call (781) 334-5411 to set up an appointment or find out more information about the service.

Porter said the library hopes to expand the service and encourages residents to share their experiences so the process can be evaluated. Residents who are unable to get to the library should contact the library to see if other arrangements are available.

For further information about Sidewalk Service, please contact the library by phone or email at the numbers above.

Porter reminds patrons that virtual programming, including new additions Creativebug, which offers instructional videos for arts and crafts for all levels, and RB Digital which offers online magazines AND access to Acorn TV, Great Courses and other offerings.
