SWAMPSCOTT — The most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau estimates Swampscott has grown by more than 10 percent in population — from 13,787 to 15,298 — since the 2010 U.S. census.
While the 2020 census numbers, which are being collected into the fall, may be similar or dissimilar to the Census Bureau’s most recent data shown in this article, here are some other ways Swampscott has changed demographically in the last decade:
The percentage of Swampscott residents under the age of 18 has grown from 22.8 percent in 2010 to an estimated 23.3 percent. However, the percentage of people over age 65 is also estimated to have increased, from 17.8 percent to 18.9 percent.
Swampscott’s racial demography has gotten slightly more diverse, according to most recent estimates. The population is 95.2 percent white (97.5 percent in 2010), 0.9 percent Black (0.7 percent in 2010), 0 percent Native American (0.1 percent in 2010), 0.7 percent Asian (unchanged), 2.8 percent two or more races (0.8 percent in 2010), and 3.3 percent Hispanic and Latino of any race (1.3 percent in 2010).
The number of households is about the same in recent estimates (5,495) compared to 2010 (5,520).
The median household income in 2018 was estimated at $113,411, compared with $84,174 ($99,915 in 2020 dollars). In 2010, 3.7 percent of the population was recorded as living below the poverty line, while recent numbers estimate 3 percent.
These numbers may be similar or dissimilar to those recorded in the 2020 census, and the U.S. Census Bureau has extended the census response period until October due the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, Swampscott’s response rate to the 2020 census is 74.3 percent, ahead of the statewide average of 64.3 percent.
