A 34-year-old man wanted by Massachusetts State Police for a January homicide in Lynn was arrested in Maine on Tuesday.
Derell Guy, of Lynn, was captured by Maine state law enforcement and the United States Marshals based on tips provided by troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, state police said.
Guy faces murder and armed robbery charges in connection with the shooting death of Bryan Omar Mendez, 25. The fatal shooting occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 4 on Howard Street, state police said.
MSP troopers had received tips from the public this week that placed Guy in the Wilton, Maine, area, which stemmed from the extensive media coverage that followed a July 8 announcement that State Police had added the suspect to their “Most Wanted List,” police said.
On Monday morning, local police in Wilton saw Guy and attempted to capture him, but he fled from officers and remained at-large overnight, state police said.
At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Guy was found in a wooded area near Earth Way in Carthage, Maine, a town near Wilton, and was arrested by a team of Maine State Troopers, Maine Game Wardens and U.S. Marshals Service Deputies.
“At 11:30 a.m. on July 28, 2020, Maine State Police received credible information of a confirmed sighting of Guy behind a residence on Earth Way in the town of Carthage,” said a Maine State Police statement. “Multiple law enforcement agencies immediately responded and saturated the area.
“After a brief K-9 track with the Maine State Police Tactical Team, Guy was located at approximately 1 p.m. and taken into custody without incident. He was located on the Winter Hill Road in Carthage, Maine, approximately 6 miles from where he was initially stopped.”
Guy is being held in Maine pending extradition to Massachusetts. His homicide case will be prosecuted by the Essex County District Attorney’s office, state police said.
“They have to arraign him in Maine on a fugitive from justice charge and he gets to decide if he will agree to come back to Mass or force us to get a governor’s warrant,” said Essex DA spokesperson Carrie Kimball. “We should know more tomorrow.”
