Lynn and Revere report new virus cases

Gayla Cawley

August 6, 2020 by Gayla Cawley

Lynn and Revere continued to report new coronavirus cases on Thursday, but numbers remained unchanged or were not updated in several other North Shore communities.

Although Lynn continues to report new cases, the city had a bit of a reprieve from its recent spike on Thursday, as only nine new cases were reported.

That single-digit bump in daily cases stands in stark contrast to the double-digit surges that have been reported over the past week. On Wednesday, the city reported 32 new cases.

Lynn now has 4,084 cases and 111 deaths. Of its total number of cases, 566 are active, and 3,407 residents have recovered from the virus, according to city data.

Revere, which has also seen a spike over the past week-plus, reported 12 new cases on Thursday to bring its total number of cases to 2,095.

Ninety-three residents have died and 1,678 have recovered from the virus in Revere, according to the city website.

The virus surge in Revere has prompted Mayor Brian Arrigo to take several actions aimed at flattening the curve. According to his office, the city’s seven-day positive test rate is above 6 percent, which is nearly three times the state average.

Arrigo’s office said contact tracing teams are becoming increasingly aware of spread through large, private gatherings, including one case in Revere, where one individual infected at least 20 family members and friends at gatherings.

On Thursday, Arrigo announced that all city-sponsored and sanctioned events will be suspended and students at Revere Public Schools will be taughtly remotely until health metrics improve.

The Revere School Committee plans to formalize a remote learning plan for the start of the school year at its next meeting on Monday.

The announcement comes a day after Lynn Superintendent Dr. Patrick Tutwiler announced the Lynn Public Schools would start the school year with a remote learning model for the majority of students.

Elsewhere, numbers remained the same in Lynnfield (106 cases, 11 deaths) and Nahant (50 cases, six deaths) and were not updated in Marblehead, Peabody, Saugus or Swampscott.

As of Wednesday, Marblehead had 254 cases and 30 deaths, Peabody had 1,160 cases and 174 deaths, Saugus had 598 cases and 38 deaths, and Swampscott reported 145 cases and 10 deaths.
