MARBLEHEAD — Early passersby along the Marblehead Causeway Wednesday morning may have witnessed an odd sight.

A programmable LED sign — located on Ocean Ave. near Devereux Beach — was presumably hacked into overnight and reprogrammed to prominently display the words “God is Gay” to passing motorists.

Officers were initially notified of the hack around 6:23 a.m., when a resident called to report the unusual message.

According to Marblehead Police, officers were quickly dispatched to confirm the sign change, as well as to check that the sign’s program compartment was still locked.

Marblehead’s Highway Department was notified, and the sign, which was otherwise undamaged, was switched back to its original messaging by 6:53 a.m.

The Item reached out to Marblehead Police, the Marblehead Highway Department, Town Administrator’s Office, and Selectmen’s Office, but no one returned a request for comment by the time of publication.
