Revere nears grim milestone in fight against coronavirus

Gayla Cawley

September 2, 2020 by Gayla Cawley

With two more coronavirus deaths reported on Wednesday, Revere is approaching a grim milestone.

The city’s death toll now stands at 98.

Revere also reported 10 new cases to bring the city’s caseload to 2,421.

Revere has also surpassed Lynn in terms of having a higher positive test rate over the past 14 days, according to the state Department of Public Health.

In Revere, the positive test rate is 5.75 percent, while Lynn’s has dipped to 5 percent. But other than two small towns skewing the results, Chelsea, the state’s initial hot spot, has overtaken both as the state leader, with a positive rate of 5.88 percent.

All three have a rate that is at least 5 times higher than the state average of 1.07 percent, according to the DPH.

Eleven new cases were reported in Lynn on Wednesday to bring the city’s caseload to 4,587. Of that total, 597 cases are active, 115 people have died, and 3,875 have recovered, according to city data.

New cases were also reported in Peabody, Saugus and Swampscott, but numbers remained the same in Lynnfield (114 cases, 11 deaths), Marblehead (263 cases, 30 deaths), and Nahant (52 cases, six deaths).

With three new cases reported, Peabody now has 1,244 cases and 179 deaths, and 944 people have recovered.

Saugus reported six new cases to bring the town’s total numbers to 659 cases and 40 deaths. And three new cases were reported in Swampscott to increase the town’s caseload to 160. Ten residents have died.
