LYNN — Anyone traveling through downtown Lynn in the past several months has likely come across the ongoing construction on Oxford Street.
Since April, a city contractor has been reconstructing Oxford Street, an $895,000 project aimed at improving traffic flow and making the area more pedestrian-friendly, according to Andrew Hall, Department of Public Works commissioner.
Construction has been temporarily put on hold, as there have been some delays with National Grid regarding the streetlights in the area, but Hall is hopeful the city’s contractor, Chelmsford-based Allied Paving will be back to work next week.
As part of the project, the intersection will be made more pedestrian-friendly with curb bump outs and crosswalks, new decorative street lights will be installed, and traffic calming measures will be implemented. The street will also be repaved and lined, Hall said.
“It was part of our priority plan for the Complete Streets program,” said Hall, noting that motorists tend to speed through the area, which has led to car crashes in the past.
Work has been completed on one side of the street, with crews expected to start on the other side next week. The project will be completed by the end of the construction season, which is mid-November, Hall said.
