Police Chief Tom Griffin and the City of Peabody have agreed to a new four-year contract.
Griffin has served as chief of the department since being appointed in 2014. Mayor Ted Bettencourt said Griffin is generally credited with strengthening Peabody’s community police programs and he also has received high marks for the department’s handling of several large-scale public works projects, including Peabody’s Clean and Sustainable Water Future initiative.
“I am very grateful to Mayor Bettencourt for his continued confidence in me and for the opportunity to continue as chief,” Griffin said. “Being a police officer is more challenging than ever and I am proud to lead the outstanding men and women of the Peabody Police Department.”
Prior to becoming Peabody’s chief, Griffin spent 26 years as a member of the Salem Police Department, including five years as captain and commander of the Criminal Investigations Division. A graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy, he holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Boston University. Under his leadership during his first year as Peabody’s chief, the department received a three-year accreditation from the Massachusetts Commission on Accreditation.
“Chief Griffin has provided outstanding leadership of the Peabody Police Department since he began his tenure here in 2014,” Bettencourt said. “Under Chief’s Griffin’s direction, the men and women of the Peabody Police Department have performed superbly and helped keep us safe during these uncertain times.”
