History and Hops and Lynn Museum going virtual

Guthrie Scrimgeour

September 22, 2020 by Guthrie Scrimgeour

The Lynn Museum will still hold its History and Hops night, but it will be in a different fashion.

This year, it’ll be a virtual beer-tasting event due to the continuing safety protocols made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Friday event is part of the museum’s Final Friday program, a collaboration between the Downtown Lynn Cultural District and Lynn Main Streets.

History and Hops features beers from Lynn local breweries Bentwater Brewing Company and Lucille’s Wine Shop & Tasting Room, and a take-home sausage kit from Uncommon Feasts. Pickup for the beers and sausage will take place Thursday at Lucille’s.

Also on hand is the local band “The Squeezebox Stompers.” The museum staff will ask the guests trivia questions.

Museum Director Doneeca Thurston called the event a “fall favorite tradition, where people can stay safe and have fun from home.”

The Lynn Museum, which reopened in mid-July, continues to operate during the pandemic, although the virus has forced the staff to make changes to its schedule. The museum now accepts visitors by appointment only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. To safeguard against the coronavirus, there is a limit of 20 guests at a time.

The museum has also brought back its Museum Enrichment Series For All (MESA) program, thanks to a grant from the Lynn Cultural Council. The program is a monthly lecture series that will offer community members the chance to hear from local experts and museum staff about a wide range of topics. Additionally, the museum has partnered with the Essex Heritage Area to host the Trails and Sails series, a set of free events and lectures running through the last two weeks of September.

Thurston said that events such as these are particularly important during these times as “a way to stay engaged and connected with the community.” She also said that programs like those offered at the museum are usually low-cost or free to the public, so they can be accessible during these times of economic hardship.

Tickets for the Hops and History event cost $20, with an added cost for food and beer with proceeds to benefit the Lynn Museum. Tickets for the Lynn Museum are $5 and free for children under 12.
