PEABODY — A 66-year-old woman sustained a head injury Monday morning after colliding with a tractor-trailer truck while trying to ride her bicycle across Russell Street, police said.
Police responded to the scene, which is part of the Independence Greenway Trail, shortly after 8 a.m. after receiving a call for an incident involving a motor vehicle crash between a truck and a person on a bicycle, Peabody Police Capt. Dennis Bonaiuto said.
“The officers responded to the scene and learned a 66-year-old female was riding a bicycle on a bike path, came out of the path, attempted to cross Russell Street to the (other side of the) bike path and ran into the rear of a tractor-trailer unit,” said Bonaiuto.
“She was conscious and alert and talking at the scene, but she did sustain a head injury and was transported to Lahey Clinic in Burlington for further treatment and evaluation.”
The woman had been wearing a helmet, Bonaiuto said, but the department’s police log indicated that she had been bleeding from the head following the crash.
Bonaiuto said the crash is under investigation, but it doesn’t appear that the truck was stopped at the time of the collision. The male truck driver stopped and remained at the scene following the crash, he said.
The collision occurred near the Russell Peabody Plaza at the intersection of Russell and Lowell streets, Bonaiuto said.
State Police are assisting Peabody Police with the crash reconstruction, according to a State Police spokesman.
