It was a back-and-forth battle all afternoon long for the Bishop Fenwick field hockey team, and in the end the Crusaders battled to a 2-2 tie with Bishop Stang in its season-opening game at Donaldson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
“We played well to start the year and we had plenty of scoring opportunities, but we just weren’t able to capitalize,” said Fenwick coach Marybeth Mahoney.
Grace Morey and Paige Littlehale each scored one goal for Fenwick, while goalie Cat Elias had one save in net. Kristina Rusha and Kailey Silva also played well in the draw.
Bishop Stang scored early in the first quarter and held on to a 1-0 lead until the third quarter, when Morey scored to tie the game. Littlehale scored with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter to take a 2-1 lead, but Stang scored the equalizer with five mins left in the game to force the draw.
Fenwick (0-0-1) takes on Central Catholic back at Donaldson Stadium on Tuesday (4).
BOYS SOCCER
Bishop Feehan 5, Bishop Fenwick 1
Jack Anderson scored the goal for Fenwick, while Keiron Murray and Ryan Noci played well in midfield.
“It was a difficult game,” said Fenwick coach Tony Enos. “We made a few mistakes and Feehan capitalized on them. It was also an especially difficult game with the refereeing. The refs have an almost impossible job, but the players are instructed with a certain set of rules around COVID-19 and the refs are far from consistent.”
Fenwick will host Essex Tech Monday evening (5:30)
“It was a rough season opener, but we are seeing a lot from this young team and I am excited to see the rest of the season,” said Enos.
