School Sports Roundup: Marblehead boys soccer falls to Beverly

Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead early on, the Marblehead boys soccer team couldn’t hold on and eventually fell on the road to a strong Beverly team, 4-3.

“I’m proud of the way the guys came out and played to open the season,” said Marblehead coach Elmer Magana, now in his first season at the helm. “We jumped out early and had a great start, but we just couldn’t sustain it.”

Baxter Jennings scored two goals in the loss, while Camden Heafitz scored one goal. Gavin Shevory played well in net.

Marblehead (0-1) will host Masconomet in its home opener Tuesday afternoon (4).

BOYS SOCCER

St. John’s Prep 3, Malden Catholic 0

The Eagles grabbed their first win of the season in their home opener to remain unbeaten.

Senior goalie Eoghan Daly (one save) led the way, notching his second shutout in as many games. On the offensive side Owen Siewert scored on a penalty kick to get St. John’s started in the first half. 

Evan Hannibal assisted a goal from Drew Keenan in the second half and junior James Gikas finished off the scoring with his first varsity goal.

The Eagles (1-0-1) are back at home for their senior day Tuesday (5) where they’ll host Xaverian.

GIRLS SOCCER

Swampscott 1, Masconomet 1

KK Kearney scored the lone goal for the Big Blue in the draw. Swampscott (0-1-1) will go up against Peabody on the road Tuesday afternoon (4).

Beverly 5, Marblehead 0

Marblehead (0-1) travels to Masconomet Tuesday evening (6).

FIELD HOCKEY

Lynnfield 4, North Reading 4

The Pioneers (0-1-1) travels to Amesbury Tuesday afternoon (3:30).
