The Peabody boys soccer team ran into a buzzsaw at Coley Lee Field, falling to Northeastern Conference newcomer Masconomet by a score of 5-1 Tuesday afternoon. The loss was the first of the season for the Tanners, who started the year red-hot on offense.
Kyle Joyce scored the lone goal for the Tanners in the loss, his 10th goal in just three games. Bruno Correia had one assist in the loss.
Masconomet came out and scored quickly to open the game, taking advantage of an opportunity and scoring just over two minutes into play to go up 1-0. The Chieftains were able to hold onto that lead until the halftime break despite a number of scoring opportunities for Peabody, particularly from Joyce.
Peabody came out strong to start the second half, eventually cashing in on one of its many opportunities when Correia broke into the offensive zone and found Joyce for the game-tying goal.
But just as quickly as the Tanners had gained momentum, Masconomet took it back.
Just four minutes after Peabody’s goal, Masconomet retook the lead on a goal from Zach Peterson. The Chieftains added another goal less than three minutes later to go up 3-1, and they never looked back from there. Masconomet added three more goals over the final 30 minutes to play to cruise to victory.
Peabody (2-1) will look to get back on the winning track Friday (4) on the road at Beverly.
