SAUGUS — A strange odor emanating from a home in Saugus that was detected during an unrelated 911 call was later determined not to be hazardous, Fire Captain Christopher Rizza announced Wednesday.
Deputy Fire Chief Tom D’Eon said police were dispatched to a home on Sapphire Road around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a call that a resident was suffering a mental health episode.
Once there, D’Eon said personnel noted an odd smell of chemicals and put out a call for a Tier One response from the state’s hazardous materials team.
A 10-member hazmat team was dispatched to the site and spent several hours running tests to ensure there was no threat to residents.
Rizza announced at a 3 p.m. press conference that no issues had been detected.
“(The fire department) was there to take on a support role while the hazmat technicians investigated and tried to secure whatever it was that may (have been) hazardous,” D’Eon said, adding that it was immediately unclear what may have caused the smell.
“There was no threat to public safety, but we wanted to do our due diligence and make sure it was safe,” Rizza said.
