LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield boys soccer team sent its seniors off on a high note Wednesday night, taking down Cape Ann League foe Triton, 2-0, on Senior Night at Lynnfield High School.
“We played well tonight and things are starting to come together for us,” said Lynnfield coach Brent Munroe. “We’ve been carrying play lately and it was nice to see us pay it off with a couple of goals and a win.”
At halftime of Wednesday’s game, the Pioneers honored their group of 10 seniors — captain Jack Bird, captain Luke Martinho, captain Dante Gesamondo, Lars Ruecker, David Picariello, Chris Pavao, Jack Zalvan, Mateusz Brzezinski, Alexis Robles and Chris daSilva — for their contributions to the program over the past four years.
“We have a great group of captains that really led us through a strange start to this season, and they were great leaders before that as well,” said Munroe. “Luke has been one of our top players for years now, Dante has been a huge player for us and Jack has been a great captain as well. Guys like Jack Zalvan and Lars Ruecker have made big contributions. Even the guys who haven’t played as much for us, they all came out tonight and played a great game. It’s a great group of guys.”
As for the game, sophomore Alex Gentile paced the offense with two goals in the win, while junior Domenic Ferrante had one assist. Gesamondo and daSilva split time in net to earn the combined shutout.
Munroe believes that the Pioneers are moving in a positive direction as the season progresses, with the offense starting to find its stride after a slow start to the year.
“Things are really starting to click for us offensively,” said Munroe. “We weren’t creating a lot of scoring chances in the early part of the year, but over the past couple of games that’s started to change. We created more opportunities (Wednesday) and hopefully we’ll be able to continue that.”
Lynnfield has a tough stretch coming up to close the season, with games against strong CAL opponents like Pentucket and Newburyport still on the horizon.
“We’re going to be taking on some tough teams down the stretch here, so we’ll have to be playing our best soccer,” said Munroe. “If we can continue to play well like we have been, I like our chances. Wins would be great, but I’d be happy if we just continue to play well throughout the rest of the year.”
The Pioneers (5-1-1) host Pentucket Saturday morning (10).
