From the day Bishop Fenwick baseball coach Russ Steeves saw Scott Emerson as a freshman, he knew he had a player. And now, as Emerson comes up on his final year with the Crusaders, he’s locked in his future plans with a commitment to play at Bridgewater State University.
“I’m really excited to have made my decision,” said Emerson. “Going to the campus, I just fell in love right away. It’s the perfect size and it has a great atmosphere. I can’t wait to get started there.”
“Scott is ‘Mr. Versatility,’ and I just love having a guy who can do so many different things out there,” said Steeves. “He’s played infield, outfield, catcher and he’s going to do some pitching for us this year too. He’s a jack of all trades.”
Emerson, who has played nearly every position on the field for Fenwick over his tenure, made a connection with Bridgewater State coach Greg Zackrison early on. After meeting with him on campus and getting introduced to a number of his teammates, Emerson was sold.
“I just made a really great connection with the coach from the start, and when he was giving me the tour around campus and telling me how he coaches, I loved what I heard.”
After missing his all-important junior season on the diamond with Fenwick, Emerson knew he’d have to pick up the slack by playing in as many summer showcases as he could. After bouncing from showcase to showcase, including a few days at the annual Lynn Invitational, Emerson decided that making a recruiting video with Recruiting Edge Baseball would also help bolster his prospects.
“It was extremely tough with no games, especially because your junior season is so important for recruiting,” said Emerson. “I just dove head-first into doing showcases, and those were really important because you didn’t know how many chances you’d get, so you had to perform. I actually got around to making my recruiting video a little late, but it all worked out.”
As the season shifted to the fall, Emerson got back together with his Crusaders teammates for a full slate of fall ball games.
“It was really huge to get the team together after missing the spring,” said Emerson. “We were really able to build up that chemistry and get some of the newer guys more comfortable in the system.”
Emerson will be a team captain alongside fellow seniors Brandon Bloom and Tucker Destino in his final season of baseball this coming spring. All three captains were chosen by a unanimous vote from their teammates.
“We’ve already gotten a lot of stuff out of the way this fall in terms of welcoming in new players and knocking the rust off,” said Emerson. “I feel like we’re actually going to have a head start on the season when we actually get going, so we’re expecting big things.”
