The Bishop Fenwick girls soccer team continued its torrid pace through the season over the weekend, notching another shutout victory, 8-0, Saturday during a Senior Night game at Donaldson Stadium.
“I know Malden Catholic is a newer program that’s only a few years old, but they’re coming along nicely and they’re growing into a solid team,” said Fenwick coach Steve Flaherty. “We came out strong and played well all game, and it was nice to see us keep up the level of play for all 80 minutes.”
Molly Jenkins paced the offense for Fenwick with two goals and one assist, while Ally Mitchell had two goals. Isabella DelVecchio had one goal and two assists, while Elani Gikas and Mia Tsaparlis each had one goal and one assist. Lea Bettencourt scored one goal, while Amy Hatfield and Veronica Tache each had one assist.
“It’s really easy on the coach’s nerves when you have four to six players all finding the back of the net like we have now,” said Flaherty. “The girls are really doing a great job sharing the ball, and we’ve been preaching that all year. The ball doesn’t make mistakes, and when you put it in the right place good things will happen.”
Prior to the game, the Crusaders celebrated their group of five seniors — Tsaparlis, Gikas, Tache, Bettencourt and Jenna Durkin — for their contributions to the program. All five seniors have been four-year varsity players for Flaherty, with Tsaparlis, Gikas and Durkin serving as co-captains this year.
“It’s a great group of girls and they’ve been with me the whole way,” said Flaherty. “They all bring something different to the table and they all work so well together. I’m certainly going to miss them after this year.”
With only three games left in the season before the first-ever CCL Cup begins, the Crusaders are hoping to finish the season with a flurry and go into the tournament with some momentum.
“We’re playing well now, so it would be great to be able to continue that level of play for the rest of the year,” said Flaherty.
Bishop Fenwick (9-1-2) hosts rival St. Mary’s Monday evening (6:30).
“We always look forward to going up against St. Mary’s, and we know they’ll bring their A-game to the field,” said Flaherty.
