It’s always a battle between the St. Mary’s and Bishop Fenwick boys soccer teams, and Monday afternoon’s matchup was no different. After battling through a scoreless tie for the entire first half, the Crusaders managed to score early in the third quarter and hold on for a 1-0 win at Donaldson Stadium. With the win, the Crusaders extend their unbeaten streak to 11 games.
“It was a good game both ways and both teams played hard in very cold conditions,” said Fenwick coach Tony Enos. “We had a number of injuries so we asked several players to step up and they did.”
Ryan Noci scored the winning goal for Fenwick, while Jack Andrews had the assist. Ryan Arniel and Andrew McKenzie both played well as full backs, while Tyler Mullen played well as a defensive midfielder. Goalkeeper Liam Foley had seven saves in the shutout win.
“He’s always a game changer,” Enos said of Foley.
For the Spartans, Connor Hamel, Marcos Weber and Kaya Jackson played well in the loss.
“I thought overall we played really well out there and we dominated possession at times,” said St. Mary’s coach Mike D’Agostino. “We just had one breakdown in the back and Fenwick caught us.”
Fenwick (9-1-2) takes on Dexter Southfield Saturday (TBA).
St. Mary’s (4-8-1) travels to Arlington Catholic Saturday (3).
