LYNN — The Revere robbery suspect, who was shot and killed by a Lynn police officer after authorities say he pinned in another officer on a dead-end street Monday morning, has been identified as John S. Mellone, 39, of Somerville.
Mellone, a white man, was shot after he allegedly robbed a Walgreens in Revere and led police on a pursuit across three communities on Route 107, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s office.
Revere Police alerted Lynn Police shortly after 8 a.m. that the suspect vehicle was coming into Lynn on Route 107. The shooting happened at the intersection of Summer and Witt streets, the DA’s office said.
A Lynn officer working a detail on the corner saw the suspect’s vehicle turn down Witt, a dead-end street, with a Revere cruiser in pursuit, according to the DA’s office.
The Lynn officer ran to assist and fired his service weapon at the suspect after seeing the Revere officer outside of his vehicle and pinned by the suspect vehicle, Kimball said.
The suspect died at the scene and the Revere officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was not shot, the DA’s office said.
The incident remains under investigation and the Lynn officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, as required by Lynn Police Department policy, according to Mayor Thomas M. McGee.
