Three-hour police standoff resolved after Lynn shooting

LYNN — A suspect who barricaded himself inside a Boston Street apartment building after a man was shot at the residence surrendered himself to police Monday night.

The suspect was taken into custody after a three-hour standoff with police that followed a shooting at the 282 Boston St. address, which left the victim hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Lynn Police Lt. Michael Kmiec said.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., police responded to a report of gunshots at 282 Boston St. and found a man suffering from at least one bullet wound to his torso. The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment, Kmiec said.

“While investigating the circumstances of the shooting, officers attempted to make contact with a person of interest in the third floor apartment at 282 Boston St., ” said Kmiec. “After initially speaking to officers through the door, the individual became uncooperative.”

At that point, Lynn Police secured the perimeter and evacuated residents from the building. A crisis negotiator from the department responded to the scene and attempted to establish communication with the suspect, Kmiec said.

“The Massachusetts State Police were contacted and multiple units responded to provide assistance including representatives from the STOP team, as well as investigators from the Essex County District Attorney’s office,” said Kmiec.

With the building surrounded by local and state police, including members of the state’s STOP, or SWAT team, the suspect eventually surrendered himself to authorities at approximately 6:45 p.m. and was subsequently taken into custody, Kmiec said.
