Lynn breaks single-day record for new virus cases

November 18, 2020 by Gayla Cawley

LYNN — Lynn reported 117 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, which represents the city’s highest single-day total throughout the pandemic.

The previous single-day high was on April 24, when 115 new cases were reported in a 24-hour period, according to city data.

Cases have been surging in Lynn for the past two months, but until Wednesday, the daily increases had been capped at the 87 new cases that were reported on two consecutive days last week, on Thursday and Friday.

The surge appeared to be slowing at the start of this week, with 39 new cases reported on Monday. But the city reported 64 new cases on Tuesday, and nearly doubled that increase on Wednesday, according to city data.

Lynn now has 6,841 cases, which includes 1,098 active cases. Another fatality was reported on Wednesday as well, which brings the city’s death toll to 128, according to city data.

The recent virus spike in Lynn is similar to what is being seen statewide and across the nation this fall, which health and elected officials have been referring to as the second wave of COVID-19.

Cities and states have been tightening restrictions as the United States has been reporting record numbers of daily case increases and hospitalizations over the past two weeks.

More than 160,000 new cases were reported in the country last Thursday alone, which marked the highest single-daily increase since the pandemic began about nine months ago.

On the North Shore, Revere, another coronavirus hot spot, reported 44 new cases on Wednesday to bring the city’s total number of cases to 3,955. The death toll in Revere remained the same at 111, according to the city website.

In Peabody, 57 new cases and two additional deaths have been reported since Monday. The city now has 1,890 cases, 196 deaths, and 1,201 people have recovered, according to the health department.

Three new cases were reported in Nahant to bring the town’s caseload to 86. Six people have died from the virus, according to the town website.

Numbers remained the same in Lynnfield (231 cases, 14 deaths) and were not updated in Marblehead, Saugus or Swampscott on Wednesday.

Swampscott had 221 cases and 11 deaths as of Monday and numbers in Marblehead (328 cases, 30 deaths) and Saugus (1,042 cases, 45 deaths) have not been updated since last Friday.
