SAUGUS — Massachusetts State Police are seeking the public’s help in identifying a driver who struck a pedestrian on Route 1 South in Saugus Thursday morning.
Police reported the crash occurred at approximately 10:17 a.m. and that preliminary investigations indicate the victim, who is employed by a business in that area, stepped into the roadway to retrieve a barrel that had blown onto the road.
After striking the victim, police said the motorist did not stop and instead continued onto Route 99.
The victim, a 24-year-old Gloucester man, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where his condition is currently unknown.
A press release from the State Police-Danvers Barracks states that police are looking for a white sedan, possibly a Nissan Sentra, believed to be driven by a white male. The vehicle may have front-end and undercarriage damage.
A spokesman from the department’s media relations team said Saugus Police have assisted in the investigation.
“They were able to provide some video footage (of the suspect vehicle),” he said.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call the State Police-Danvers Barracks at (978) 5380-6161, or simply call 911.
