SAUGUS — The hit-and-run driver who struck and injured a pedestrian in Saugus earlier this week has been identified, state police say.
The driver of the vehicle, believed to be a white sedan, reportedly hit the victim while driving southbound on Route 1 around 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say the victim, identified as a 24-year-old Gloucester man who works for a business in the area, had stepped into the roadway to retrieve a barrel that had blown into the road when he was hit by the driver, who reportedly failed to stop and instead continued on to Route 99.
The man was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.
Surveillance of the suspect vehicle was released by state police Wednesday afternoon, and the department announced Friday morning they had identified the car’s operator, whose name has not been released.
Authorities say an investigation is ongoing into whether charges are warranted.
