Following a season in which she led her team in goals, assists and total points, Bishop Fenwick junior captain Grace Morey has been named the 2020 Item Player of the Year for field hockey.
Morey — who was also named MVP of the Catholic Central League this year — had 15 goals, eight assists and 38 total points during her junior campaign with the Crusaders. Her efforts helped lead Fenwick to a 6-3-2 record for the season and a win in the inaugural CCL Cup, where Morey scored one goal in a victory over Bishop Feehan.
There were also five players named to this year’s All-Item team in St. Mary’s senior Pejae Parent, St. Mary’s senior Achan Wol, Bishop Fenwick senior Kristina Rusha, Bishop Fenwick senior Cat Elias and Peabody junior Jackie Scopa.
Parent has been one of the Spartans’ leading players since the inception of the program, and she continued that in the team’s first season of varsity play this year. A senior captain, Parent led St. Mary’s in goals with nine — including a hat trick in a CCL Cup game against Austin Prep.
Wol was another pillar in the building of the St. Mary’s field hockey program, leading the way with stellar performances in net all season. Wol — who was also a senior captain for the Spartans — averaged 11.3 saves per game and earned Player of the Week honors from the Boston Globe back in October when she had a 13-save shutout performance against Bishop Stang.
Elias was a stalwart in net for Fenwick in her senior season, making 116 total saves and earning CCL All-Star honors. Her goals against average stood at 1.64 goals per game, she held a save percentage of 86.6 percent and made a season-high 18 saves in a win over Dexter Southfield.
Rusha also played a big role in the success of the Crusaders this season, taking on a big role in the midfield with the switch to 7-on-7 play. She responded well on both sides of the field, using her speed and prowess to be a playmaker on offense and a stopper on defense.
Scopa played in one of the shorter seasons in the area as a member of the Tanners, but she made an impact on the field regardless as one of the top scorers in the Northeastern Conference this year.
Also earning Item All-Star honors for the 2020 field hockey season were Yirsy Queliz, Maggie Pierce, Shannon Lovett and Makayla McGrath (St. Mary’s); Paige Littlehale and Kailey Silva (Bishop Fenwick); Madison Murphy, Ava Marotta and Grace Klonsky (Lynnfield); Tess Keaney, Madi Monahan and Mae Colwell (Marblehead); Sydney Branga (Peabody); Harper Clopton, Jordan Waters, Isabella Modica, Olivia Passalacqua and Chloe Rakauskas (Swampscott).
