Bishop Fenwick’s Isabella DelVecchio put all of her skills to good use during the 2020 season, contributing heavily to the Crusaders’ 12-2-2 season on offense and defense to earn the title of 2020 Item Player of the Year for girls soccer.
DelVecchio, a junior captain at Fenwick, finished the season in a tie for the team lead in total points with 13 after notching six goals and seven assists. Her offensive prowess combined with her strong ball control and leadership abilities helped pace the Crusaders through a successful, albeit shortened, 2020 season. DelVecchio was named an Eastern Massachusetts Girls Soccer Coaches Association (EMGSCA) First Team All-State selection and a Catholic Central League All-Star this year as well.
There were also five players selected to this year’s All-Item team in St. Mary’s senior Susannah Cornell, Bishop Fenwick sophomore Ally Mitchell, Bishop Fenwick junior Claudia Keith, Swampscott junior Sophie DiGrande and Danvers junior Arianna Bezanson.
Cornell was one of the key leaders for St. Mary’s this season, scoring five goals and adding seven assists to lead the Spartans. Named the team’s MVP as a senior captain, Cornell also earned EMGSCA Second Team All-Star and CCL All-Star honors.
Mitchell was a scoring machine for the Crusaders this fall, scoring a team-high 12 goals while adding one assist to tie for the team lead in total points (13). Mitchell was also named a CCL All-Star.
Keith kept Fenwick in every game this year with her prowess in net, notching a North Shore-leading nine shutouts out of the 16 games the Crusaders played. Already selected to be a captain next season as a senior, Keith was named to the CCL All-Star team this year.
DiGrande would be this year’s leading contender for comeback player of the year after returning from a torn ACL in her sophomore season to lead the Big Blue in scoring as a junior. With her eight goals, four assists and 12 total points, DiGrande earned EMGSCA Second Team All-Star honors.
Despite sitting just outside of The Item’s immediate coverage area, Bezanson’s junior season with Danvers was almost impossible to ignore. In just 11 games, all of which ended up in wins for the Falcons, Bezanson notched an astonishing 22 goals to go along with five assists — a North Shore-leading 27 total points. Her exploits didn’t go unnoticed, as the EMGSCA named Bezanson one of three All-American choices from Massachusetts this year. She earned All-New England and First Team All-State honors as well.
Also earning Item All-Star honors for the 2020 girls soccer season were Julia Nickolau and Eliza Brown (St. Mary’s); Elani Gikas, Jenna Durkin, Amy Hatfield and Ella Morgan (Bishop Fenwick); Lauren Braconnier, Lauren Mitchell, Ashley Mitchell, Julia Colucci and Adri Parisi (Lynnfield); Ella Kramer and Anna Rigby (Marblehead); Aja Alimonti, Maddy Schacchi and Emma Bloom (Peabody); Isabella Cunha and Sierra Clawson (Salem); Madison Goyetche, Jordan Collins and Megan Bluette (Saugus); Maddie Hudson, Grace Hudson, Aislinn McCarran and Lillian Gosselin (Swampscott).
