Virus cases spike in Lynn, Peabody, Revere

Triple digit spikes in new coronavirus cases were reported in Lynn, Peabody and Revere on Friday. 

The largest spike was seen in Lynn, which reported 173 new cases to bring the city’s caseload to 9,131. 

Two additional deaths were also reported in Lynn, which brings the city’s death toll to 139, according to city data.  

In Lynn, 1,561 cases are active and 7,431 people have recovered from the virus, according to city data.

The city’s positive test rate has climbed to 12.27 percent — eighth highest in the state — and its daily incidence rate increased to 89.19 cases per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks, which reflects the skyrocketing case numbers the city has reported over that time period. 

Revere, another COVID-19 hot spot, reported 100 new cases to bring the city’s total numbers to 5,333 cases and 119 deaths, according to the city website. 

The positive test rate in Revere climbed to 10.17 percent and its daily incidence rate is nearly triple digits, at 98.6 cases per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks, according to the state Department of Public Health (DPH). 

In Peabody, another red community, 132 new cases and two additional deaths have been reported since Wednesday. The city now has 3,018 cases, 214 deaths, and 1,470 people have recovered, according to the health department. 

Peabody’s positive test rate increased to 8.9 percent and its daily incidence rate surged to 84.74 cases per 100,000 residents over the past 14 days, according to the DPH. 

Saugus, which is in the red for another week, reported 89 new cases to bring the town’s total numbers to 1,714 cases and 46 deaths, according to the town website.  

The town’s positive test rate is nearing double digits, at 9.67 percent, and its daily incidence rate climbed to 96.79 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past two weeks, according to the DPH. 

Lynnfield (436 cases, 16 deaths), which reported 21 new cases, is also in the red this week with a positive test rate of 7.03 percent and a daily incidence rate of 82.56 cases per 100,000 residents, according to the DPH. 

In Marblehead, 18 new cases were reported to bring the town’s total numbers to 503 cases and 31 deaths, according to town data. 

Numbers remained the same in Nahant (108 cases, six deaths) and were not updated in Swampscott, which had 380 cases and 11 deaths as of Thursday.
