As the last remnants from this month’s snow storm have melted away, the Lynn Woods Snowshoe Series ended its first session of its inaugural season this week. The first session took place from Dec. 17 to Dec. 27, with participants trekking five possible paths that ranged from 1.53 miles to 3.31 miles.
Marblehead’s Sal Genovese had a great session — winning four of five races — while Lynn’s Jim Pawlicki won the longest race of the session. The Lynn pair of Freddi Triback and Brian Walfield also had some consistent finishes while Boxford’s Michael McKie — a regular top finisher in the Lynn Woods Running series — also had a well-rounded session.
The shortest path was 1.53 miles and started and ended at the Great Woods Road entrance. Genovese took first place with a time of 14:42 while Woburn’s Chris Smith wasn’t far behind (14:45). Next up was Triback (17:25) and Walfield (17:33) before Mark Rosenblum (19:34) of Melrose. Rounding out the top 11 was McKie (22:56), Judy Tasker (Melrose, 24:43), Kelley Zepf (Medford, 24:43), Jeff Cook (Melrose, 25:05), Scott Somer (Peabody, 27:29) and Bonnie Hallinan (Danvers, 31:57).
Next was a 1.63-mile path that went through Ox Pasture Lane near Walden Pond. Genovese had the time to beat at 15:00 with Smith once again not far behind at (15:04). Triback (17:32) and Walfield (17:30) followed and Rosenblum (17:36), McKie (23:00) and Hallinan (32:08) rounded out the top seven.
A 1.67-mile loop starting and finishing at the Pennybrook Road entrance followed with Genovese (15:53) finishing first. Eric Bowden (16:42) followed with Triback (16:54) and Walfield (17:00) coming in at third and fourth. Rounding out the top six was Hallinan (36:08) and Lynn’s Larry Godbout (42:06).
Genovese’s last win of the session came on a 2.88-mile path once again starting and ending at Pennybrook that took him 27:45. Triback (28:48) and Walfield (28:51) took second and third this time and Rosenblum (44:39) and Hallinan (56:22) rounded out the top five.
The longest race of the session was a 3.31-mile path starting and ending at Great Woods. Pawlicki had the time to beat at 29:28 while Melrose’s Jeff Cook (32:21) took second place. Winthrop’s Warren MacPhail (33:08) came in third followed by Triback (34:51) and Walfield (34:54). Smith (36:05) and McKie (27:28) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, while Anne Noga (Salem, 44:45), Bowden (52:43), Edward Zipper (Stoneham, 54:20), Genovese (54:28) and Hallinan (1:13:00) rounded out the top 12.
The second session of the season will begin once there is sufficient snowfall again.
