It seems like the St. Mary’s girls basketball team has completely shaken off the rust after its two-week layoff, rolling to a 72-30 win over Catholic Central League foe Arlington Catholic on the road Thursday evening. The Spartans took down the Cougars for the second time in as many days.
“From the opening tip, I think we just came out with a whole different kind of energy (Thursday),” said St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall. “I think after shaking off some rust (Wednesday), (Thursday) we were much closer to where we were two weeks ago. It was really a strong overall win for us.”
St. Marys had 11 people on the scoresheet, with seven of those players scoring between six and 13 points. Sophomore Yirsy Queliz and senior Maiya Bergdorf led the way with 13 points each, while senior Nicolette D’Itria scored 10 points. Freshman AJ Hyacinthe had a strong game off the bench, notching six points, four rebounds and three steals. Bergdorf is currently sitting at 992 career points, with the potential to hit her 1,000-point milestone in the Spartans’ next game.
“Getting another balanced scoring attack like that was great to see,” said Newhall. “If we can continue to play like that and keep clicking on all cylinders, we’ll be in good shape.”
St. Mary’s (3-0) plays its third game in three days Friday night (6) with a home game against Cardinal Spellman at Conigliaro Gymnasium.
“It’s a big night, we’ll be back in our home gym and we’ll be ready to go,” said Newhall. “One thing we’ve really learned over the past two weeks is that we need to take things one day at a time, and that’s what we’re doing. I really like the energy that we’re playing with right now, and hopefully we can continue that momentum on Friday and beyond.”
