Turning service into scholarships

Community-minded local students who can outline their achievements in an essay are eligible to be Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) scholarship winners.

Area high school seniors committed to attending a two- or four-year college, trade, or technical school are invited through April 9 to submit a scholarship application packet.

“PACC believes that education is essential for building a better tomorrow for our students. These scholarships will allow our children to continue to grow and flourish,” said Chamber Executive Assistant Mary Bellavance.

Application packages are available through the guidance offices at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School, Bishop Fenwick, St. John’s Prep and St. Mary’s High School in Lynn and on the Peabody Chamber of Commerce website at www.peabodychamber.com.

Applicants must meet one of following categories to be eligible for consideration for a scholarship award: Be a Peabody resident who attends school in Peabody;  a Peabody resident who attends school in another town; a Peabody resident or non-resident employed by a Peabody Area Chamber of Commerce member; a Peabody resident or non-resident who is the child of someone employed in Peabody; an area chamber member, a Peabody Young Entrepreneurs Academy graduate.

The application process includes academic history, a short essay, and documentation of community service followed by an interview. All interviews will be conducted in May.

PACC’s annual Torigian Gold Classic is critical to supporting the scholarship award. Held last year in August with COVID-19 social distancing and other safety protocols in place, the Classic raised $10,000 for the PACC and Rotary Club of Peabody scholarships.

Recent scholarship winners included Veterans Memorial High School graduate Sophia Brunet who received a political science scholarship; Andrew Langley, a Veterans Memorial graduate who received a community service scholarship; Leigha- Mae Hubisz, a Veterans Memorial graduate who received a community service scholarship; Jared Widberg, a St. John’s graduate who received a community service scholarship; Nicole Johns, Bishop Fenwick graduate; Matthew F Bloom, Malden Catholic, and Noah Surman.

For more information, contact the Chamber office at 978-531-0384 or email [email protected].

Applications forwarded to PACC by email should be in pdf format. The Chamber is located at 38 Pulaski St., fourth floor, Peabody, MA 01960.
