With a two-goal performance Saturday night against Bishop Feehan, Bishop Fenwick senior captain Gabby Davern hit a career milestone by notching her 100th point as a member of the Crusaders girls hockey team.
“It’s a well-deserved milestone for Gabby because she works so hard and she’s really dedicated herself to the sport,” said Fenwick coach John Kasle. “All of that work is really paying off. She’s strong on the puck, she’s always a danger to score in the offensive zone and she’s always skating with her head up and looking to make a play. She’s truly an all-around player.”
Davern’s milestone was just one high note in a weekend of great play from the Crusaders, with Fenwick winning two games in two days. Fenwick took down Feehan 7-3 on Saturday night, then 12 hours later came back to take down Arlington Catholic by a score of 3-1.
“I thought overall it was a really good weekend for us,” Kasle said. “It’s always great to come away with two wins in two days, but the way in which we won was really great. We had to dig down in both games to pull off the wins, and we were able to do that both times.”
Davern, sophomore Abi Bruner and sophomore Abbey Millman scored two goals each in Saturday’s win, while junior Catherine Salvo scored one goal. On Sunday, Davern, junior Emma Perry and junior Lauren Diranian scored one goal each. Junior goalie Sedona Lawson played well in both games.
Both games played out in a similar fashion for Fenwick, with the Crusaders needing to regain momentum going into the final period in both instances. In both cases, the Fenwick girls came up big and made the plays when they counted most.
“Even though the scores might not show it, both games were really pretty close going into the final period,” said Kasle. “In both cases, the other team had scored some goals late in the second period to take over the momentum, and we really talked in between periods about needing to put our foot down and win the game in the third. We were able to score early in both games and get the job done.”
Fenwick (5-2-0) will be back on the ice Thursday with a road game against St. Joseph’s Prep at Warrior Ice Arena — the practice home of the Boston Bruins.
“It’s always a really special thing for us to be able to play there,” said Kasle. “All the girls are huge Bruins fans, and you can see their eyes get a little wide every time we go there. Not only that, but we’ve been able to have a decent amount of success there over the last couple years we’ve been lucky enough to play there. It should be an exciting time and we’re really looking forward to getting out there again.”
