The St. Mary’s girls hockey team continued its strong play Thursday afternoon, notching a 5-0 shutout win over Catholic Central League foe Bishop Stang at Connery Rink. The Spartans took home their second win in less than 24 hours after beating Shawsheen Tech 6-1 on Wednesday night.
Senior captain Marina DiBiasio and sophomore Lily Pregent led the way with one goal and one assist each. Senior captains Samantha Porazinski and Felicia D’Alessandro each scored one goal in the win, as did freshman Hannah Coleman. Senior captain Makayla McGrath and freshman Kasey Litwin each had two assists, while freshman Regan Sullivan had one assist. Sophomore goalie Rylee Smith made 16 saves to earn the shutout win in net, her second shutout of the season.
St. Mary’s (6-2-1) will host Malden Catholic Saturday night (7:30) back at Connery Rink.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Bishop Fenwick 3, St. Joseph’s Prep 0
Abi Bruner had one goal and one assist to lead the way for Fenwick, while Gabby Davern and Zoe Elwell each scored one goal. Lauren Diranian notched two assists, while goalie Sedona Lawson notched her second shutout of the season in net. Allison Countie and Madison Faragi played well on the defensive end.
Bishop Fenwick (6-2-0) hosts Austin Prep Sunday morning (9).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Danvers 42, Marblehead 38
Despite taking a lead into the fourth quarter, the Magicians came up just short in their second game of the season.
Marblehead (0-2) is right back in action Friday evening (6) when it hosts Salem.
Winthrop 52, Saugus 12
Maura Dorr and Maddie Stiglets each scored 15 points to pace the Vikings’ offensive attack in the win.
Winthrop (6-1) travels to Gloucester Friday evening (6:30).
It wasn’t Saugus’ night, but Ryann Moloney and Devany Millerick both put in solid efforts on the defensive end.
“It was just one of those for us, but hopefully we can learn something from it,” said Saugus coach Mark Shruender. “We didn’t coach well at all. The good news is we get the chance to get better (Friday).”
Saugus (0-4) hosts Beverly for its Senior Night game Friday evening (5:45).
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. John’s Prep 69, Malden Catholic 52
The Eagles took home a solid win on Senior Night, honoring their group of six seniors — Aidan Callahan, Quinn Curtin, Jackson Stacey, Noah Thomas, Patrick Atkins and Eric Wing — for their contributions to the program.
Sophomore sensation Rollie Castineyra led the way for the Eagles with 23 points, while Callahan was right behind with 22 points.
St. John’s Prep (3-2) hosts Xaverian Tuesday evening (6).
