Six North Shore communities stay red, Lynn among top 10 in positive test rate

January 29, 2021 by Gayla Cawley

Lynnfield and Swampscott are out of the red this week, but six other local North Shore communities are still designated as having a high risk of COVID-19 transmission.

Leading those local hot spots is Lynn, which has the ninth highest positive test rate in the state — 10.7 percent over the past 14 days, according to the state Department of Public Health (DPH).

However, there is reason for optimism as the city’s positive test and daily incidence rates both declined significantly this week. The city’s positive test rate was 12.87 percent last week and its daily incidence rate decreased from 127.2 to 92.4 new cases per 100,000 residents this week, the DPH reported.

Sixty-four new cases and an additional death were reported in Lynn on Friday, which brings the city’s numbers to 14,386 cases and 178 deaths. A total of 1,634 cases are active and 12,574 people have recovered from the virus, according to city data.

Revere is not too far behind with a positive test rate of 10.15 percent, and its daily incidence rate is higher than Lynn’s, at 102.6 new cases per 100,000 residents over the past 14 days, the DPH reported.

However, like Lynn, both of those rates dropped in Revere over the past week — the city had a positive test rate of 11.31 percent and a daily incidence rate of 135.7 last week, the DPH reported.

Eleven new cases were reported in Revere on Friday, which now has 8,805 cases and 141 deaths, according to the city website.

Peabody, another red community, reported 18 new cases and three additional deaths on Friday. The city now has 5,605 cases, 269 people have died, and 4,470 have recovered, according to the health department.

Nahant, Salem and Saugus are also in the red this week, which did not report a change in their case and death counts on Friday.

Moderate-risk Marblehead has reported 81 new cases since last Friday to bring the town’s caseload to 1,000. Thirty-one people have died, the town reported.

Lynnfield, which is out of the red this week, reported three new cases on Friday. The town now has 901 cases and 27 deaths, according to its website.

Numbers remained the same in Nahant (211 cases, six deaths) and were not updated in Salem, Saugus or Swampscott. As of Thursday, Salem had 3,672 cases and 65 deaths, Saugus had 3,213 cases and 60 deaths, and Swampscott had 840 cases and 16 deaths.
