The Winthrop girls basketball notched what was possibly its marquee win of the year Friday night, earning a hard-fought 37-31 victory over Northeastern Conference foe Peabody on the road.
Maddie Stiglets led the way for the Vikings with 15 points.
Winthrop (9-1) hosts Swampscott Tuesday night (7).
Emma Bloom had 11 points, three steals and three blocks to lead the Tanners, while Abby Bettencourt scored eight points and Isabel Bettencourt scored six points.
Peabody (5-1) has a quick turnaround with a home game against Saugus Saturday afternoon (1:15), when the Tanners will celebrate their Senior Day.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 64, Archbishop Williams 38
The Spartans earned their ninth consecutive victory Friday night at Tony Conigliaro Gymnasium.
Maiya Bergdorf had 17 points to lead the way for the Spartans, while Nicolette D’Itria also finished in double figures with 13 points. Pej’ae Parent scored nine points in the win.
St. Mary’s (15-1) travels to Bishop Feehan Sunday afternoon (3).
Swampscott 55, Gloucester 34
The Big Blue needed to rally back to earn the victory Friday night, scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter to take home the win.
Freshman Victoria Quagrello led the Big Blue with 11 points, while junior Maddie Hudson added 10 points. Juniors Brooke Matela (seven points, seven rebounds) and Chloe Rakauskas played well, while sophomore Niya Morgen had six points and six steals and sophomore Lilian Gosslin had six points.
Swampscott (4-2) travels to Masconomet Monday evening (6).
Danvers 59, Salem 30
Salem (1-3) plays on the road at Marblehead Saturday afternoon (12).
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 71, Archbishop Williams 51
St. Mary’s showed just how well it can play when its on its game Friday night, notching a 20-point win over the first-place team in the Catholic Central League on the road.
Sammy Batista paced the Spartans offense in the win, scoring 28 points. Ali Barry added 15 points, while Anthony D’Itria added nine points off the bench.
St. Mary’s (9-5) hosts Bishop Feehan Sunday (3).
Peabody 69, Winthrop 47
The Tanners continued their solid season with a Northeastern Conference win on the road Friday night.
Nick Vecchio led the way with 17 points, while Danny Barrett scored 16 points.
Peabody (4-2) travels to Saugus Saturday morning (11:45).
Winthrop (0-8) hosts Danvers Sunday afternoon (12).
Austin Prep 59, Bishop Fenwick 54
Max Grenert notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Jason Romans (13 points, seven rebounds) and Alex Gonzalez (13 points) led the Crusaders in scoring.
Fenwick (7-5) hosts Salem Academy Saturday afternoon (1:30).
Salem 67, Danvers 25
Behind a 23-point output from Bobby Jellison, the Witches earned another Northeastern Conference win Friday afternoon.
Jorge Guerrero notched a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Ethan Doyle filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Tommy Beauregard added eight points and played great defense.
Salem (6-1) hosts Masconomet Tuesday evening (6).
Masconomet 55, Saugus 46
The Sachems were led by Myles Manalaysay, who scored 15 points in the loss. Donovan Clark added nine points, while Tyrone Manderson and Kyle McLaughlin each scored four points.
Saugus (1-5) has a little more than 12 hours of rest before taking on Peabody Saturday morning (11:45).
