SAUGUS — Emergency crews rescued a woman from the Saugus River after she became stuck in waist-deep mud and water Friday morning.
Saugus Fire Chief Michael Newbury reported the woman was walking along the Stocker Street Playground near the river’s edge when she took a wrong step into a patch of particularly deep mud and became trapped.
“The river must be low, and she ended up going up to her waist in water,” Newbury said.
The woman was able to call 911 herself and told dispatchers she was stuck approximately 20 yards from shore.
Newbury said first responders dressed in ice rescue suits were able to reach the woman by attaching themselves to a rope and walking out through the mud.
“The whole crew went down with the engines and the boat because we didn’t know if she was in the water or the mud,” he said.
The woman was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
“It was a nice overall team effort,” Newbury said.
